Nazareth Home

A Ministry of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ

Who Are We

Nazareth Home is a 24-hour per day foster home for medically compromised babies and children from birth to age six.

Nazareth Home is a 24-hour per day foster home for medically compromised babies and children from birth to age six. The home was founded in 1993 by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, to confront the growing problem of abused or abandoned children, with unique and critical medical needs. Children are placed at Nazareth Home through referrals from the Department of Child Services, and are wards of the State. Each child’s unique medical needs are met in a home-setting that allows them to receive the spiritual, physical, and emotional care that is so essential to early childhood development.

Located in a quiet suburban neighborhood in East Chicago, Indiana, it is impossible to distinguish Nazareth Home, and the miracles that happen there, from other surrounding family dwellings. However, Nazareth Home is filled with love, laughter, and a sense of peacefulness, safety, and joy for the children who live there. Despite their extraordinary health challenges, children at Nazareth Home often overcome their crises to attain normal functioning on par with their peers. Jean Bowman is the director and foster mother. She is assisted by a staff of child-care professionals, as well as medical care providers who coordinate each child’s individual healthcare plans. A group of devoted volunteers provides hundreds of hours of time each year as cuddlers, or assisting with other activities in support of the home.
